Born in Detroit on Feb. 25, 1769, Joseph Campau was a trader with Native Americans when still a boy. He increased his fortunes by dealing in real estate until he retired from active work in 1837. Among the positions he held in early Detroit, Campau was a prominent politician, trustee of the Village of Detroit, assessor, appraiser, overseer of the poor and city treasurer.
